Hilary Wallis

Artist

Hilary pioneered the comprehensive Empowerment Through Art (ETA) program of teaching adults and children in Africa to use art as a therapeutic medium of expression to aid emotional and social development, promote awareness, and empower communities. She gave vulnerable people in communities affected by HIV/AIDS, poverty and other related issues, opportunities for creative fulfillment, reducing stigma, the openness to display repressed emotions, and the chance to develop talents and uplift confidence levels.

Her visits to Africa culminated with full-scale exhibitions, her self-authored program manual and school curriculum, as well as a feature length documentary. She presented participants’ extraordinary artwork at The Boston Museum of Fine Arts where the former Prime Minister of Tanzania was the guest of honor and at events and workshops taught in the US and UK. These are constant motivators to share their stories with the world and represent these amazing people who otherwise would have no voice outside of their communities.
